Christians, should we try to emulate God?

If I tell my one year old son to specifically not eat the delicious cookie I put at easy access for him, and he violates it.. then should I forever banish him from my house and make him work hard and find his own clothes outside the dangerous streets.. thereafter should I fixate myself on a cross and torment myself to death .. then leave a note to my son that says "believe in me and have faith in me, since I died for your horrible sin"
