How do you play higher octaves on a Flute?

I know this question probably seems pretty dumb, but I'm trying to teach myself flute. I've been playing Piano for years, and a friend suggested I try teaching myself the flute. I'd be very greatful for any information. Should I wait awhile to play the three different octaves, or do you think that I can do it as a beginner?
