Why does my pet crawfish only eat plants?

I had one pet crawfish that ate feeder fish. That was cool to watch. I have a newer crawfish of a different species that only eats the aquarium plants. Is there a way to coax him to broaden his diet to include fish without starving him of the other food source. I don't want to chance killing him, but I like watching him feed.
