Short Period?

I am 38, and after suffering years of painful and heavy periods , always on time and lasting exactly 7 days, my last one lasted 3 days. This has never happened before and I am generally in good health, weight, fitness, etc... No other apparent symptoms either. My last scan and smear test was about a year ago, and there were no abnormalities. Any ideas?
