What exactly does guilty or innocent "beyond a reasonable doubt"?

I am embarred to say I get tripped up when I hear the verdict. We think he probably did it or probably did not do it......yada yada yada.) Not to make light of it the jury is deliberating this on the former gov. of Illinois this week.
