Why does my PC ask for validation when it's already been done?

I recently had to repair my PC, long story short, there is a message on the welcome screen saying that my windows could be counterfeit. But i logged on and went through the validation process successfully. Then each time a bubble pops up saying that I need to validate and I've done a thousand times already. What is going on here? I have XP.
