Do Cuban Americans of Spanish descent look like Italians?

I noticed that in many movies Italians play Cuban Americans (Perez Family, Scarface, etc.) and in some movies Cubans play Italians (like Andy Garcia in godfather III). Do the two ethnic groups look alike? Is it possible to tell them apart? Are Cubans typically darker or lighter than Italians?
